Total Solar ECLIPSE 2024

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.

Eclipse 2024: Does it matter if I go to where the sun is totally blocked?

The short answer is yes.

In just 3 days, the path of totality for the Great American Eclipse will slice through Central New York.

The total solar eclipse happening on April 8, 2024, is a once-in-a-lifetime event.

You will do yourself a huge favor to travel to an area that experiences totality. You might be asking isn’t close enough to totality good enough? No.

It’s like if you were going to a concert or special event. Would you go 90% of the way there and not see it or would you go the whole way to see the event? That’s a silly question. You’d go the whole way!

The Winter Storm That Happened the Year You Were Born

The story below was published on our local (Syracuse,New York) News website, I found it interesting to see all the major winter storms, take a look…
**********
STACKER (WSYR-TV) — The United States has seen a wide range of winters over the past century. There have been warm years where folks could stroll through parks in February to turbulent, frigid seasons where people had to hunker down inside.

There were years when blizzards swept in unannounced, covering huge swaths of the country in blankets of snow, while other years brought hurricane-force winds to cities and towns across the nation.

New England experiences a large number of hurricane-level storms and cyclones, mainly from nor’easters that form in Canada and travel south.

To give you an idea of how these winters have played out over time, Stacker put together a list featuring information and statistics for each year of the past century, beginning in 1922 right up through 2002.

Syracuse had it’s driest Fall in decades

Syracuse just experienced its driest fall season in 25 years with parts of the Finger Lakes currently under drought conditions.

For the just completed fall months of September through November, Syracuse recorded just 7.21” of rain which is more than three inches below normal and the 26th driest fall. That makes it the driest fall season since 1998 when just 7.00” fell.

The breakdown of this fall showed each month with a rainfall deficit: September was off 1.39”, October down 1.42” and November .48”

The dry weather the last three months has put the Finger Lakes under “Abnormally Dry” conditions while parts of western New York are in ‘Moderate’ or ‘Severe’ drought. Areas around Rochester and just to its southwest have had less than six inches the last 90 days!

The driest fall on record in Syracuse was 1913 when just 3.73” fell. Records in Syracuse go back to 1903.

    Labor Day

    Labor Day USA

    Labor Day USA

For many, Labor Day means barbecues, boat rides and a day off work. But do young Americans know why we celebrate?

On the first Monday of every September, Americans enjoy a long weekend marking the unofficial end of summer to celebrate American workers. A national holiday since 1894, Labor Day honors the U.S. labor movement and recognizes the many contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of America.
The push to recognize American laborers dates back to the 1880s, at a time when working conditions were often unsafe and people were overworked. Increasingly popular labor unions began to organize in protest and fight for reform. The first Labor Day parade was in 1882, when 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march in New York City, according to History.com.

So enjoy your last long weekend of the year, unofficial end of Summer, and back to work on Tuesday!!

Canadian Wildfires spreading smoke across the Eastern United States

*** 06/06/2023 *** As it looks like these fires are going to burn for a while, this story will be updated as needed.

I can taste the air: Canadian wildfire smoke spreads hazardous haze at home and in U.S.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. The source of heavy smoke blanketing the Northeastern United States is due to some of the worst forest fires that Canada has ever experienced, and experts say that climate change may make this a more regular occurrence.

As of late morning Wednesday, the air quality index (AGI) in Syracuse has gotten so bad it was hazardous. The AQI hit a high for the week over 400, launching the salt city into the highest and most unhealthy level and the smokiest city in the northeastern United States.
On Wednesday morning, the Environmental Protection Agency is reporting that air quality in upstate New York, in cities such as Rochester and Syracuse, is “very unhealthy” and in some cases “hazardous.”
t is warning the nearly 150,000 people living in the city of Syracuse to “avoid all outdoor physical activity” until conditions improve.

The EPA is also reporting “very unhealthy” air quality in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland on the perimeter of the Washington, D.C., area.

All of this is to blame on wildfires raging in the province of Quebec in Canada due to parched conditions. Winds carry the smoke straight across international borders, ending up here and to points south. One can only hope and pray for rain to tap down the flames or at least a wind shift to limit this conveyor train of pollutants.

CANADA WARNS OF RECORD 2023 WILDFIRE DESTRUCTION AS TRAVELING SMOKE IMPACTS MILLIONS OF AMERICANS

In Quebec, more than 100 fires were burning uncontrollably Tuesday.

One of the biggest concerns from the fires is the air quality.
“Over the last 20 years, we have never seen such a large area burned so early in the season,” said Natural Resources Canada researcher Yan Boulanger.

Quebec is currently the hardest-hit province in Canada following a series of wildfires sparked by lightning strikes, according to Norton.
