    Labor Day

    Labor Day USA

    Labor Day USA

For many, Labor Day means barbecues, boat rides and a day off work. But do young Americans know why we celebrate?

On the first Monday of every September, Americans enjoy a long weekend marking the unofficial end of summer to celebrate American workers. A national holiday since 1894, Labor Day honors the U.S. labor movement and recognizes the many contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of America.
The push to recognize American laborers dates back to the 1880s, at a time when working conditions were often unsafe and people were overworked. Increasingly popular labor unions began to organize in protest and fight for reform. The first Labor Day parade was in 1882, when 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march in New York City, according to History.com.

So enjoy your last long weekend of the year, unofficial end of Summer, and back to work on Tuesday!!

Canadian Wildfires spreading smoke across the Eastern United States

*** 06/06/2023 *** As it looks like these fires are going to burn for a while, this story will be updated as needed.
    —–
‘I can taste the air’: Canadian wildfire smoke spreads hazardous haze at home and in U.S.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The source of heavy smoke blanketing the Northeastern United States is due to some of the worst forest fires that Canada has ever experienced, and experts say that climate change may make this a more regular occurrence.

As of late morning Wednesday, the air quality index (AGI) in Syracuse has gotten so bad it was hazardous. The AQI hit a high for the week over 400, launching the salt city into the highest and most unhealthy level and the smokiest city in the northeastern United States.
On Wednesday morning, the Environmental Protection Agency is reporting that air quality in upstate New York, in cities such as Rochester and Syracuse, is “very unhealthy” and in some cases “hazardous.”
t is warning the nearly 150,000 people living in the city of Syracuse to “avoid all outdoor physical activity” until conditions improve.

The EPA is also reporting “very unhealthy” air quality in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland on the perimeter of the Washington, D.C., area.

All of this is to blame on wildfires raging in the province of Quebec in Canada due to parched conditions. Winds carry the smoke straight across international borders, ending up here and to points south. One can only hope and pray for rain to tap down the flames or at least a wind shift to limit this conveyor train of pollutants.

CANADA WARNS OF RECORD 2023 WILDFIRE DESTRUCTION AS TRAVELING SMOKE IMPACTS MILLIONS OF AMERICANS

In Quebec, more than 100 fires were burning uncontrollably Tuesday.

One of the biggest concerns from the fires is the air quality.
“Over the last 20 years, we have never seen such a large area burned so early in the season,” said Natural Resources Canada researcher Yan Boulanger.

Quebec is currently the hardest-hit province in Canada following a series of wildfires sparked by lightning strikes, according to Norton.

Wrapping up a historic Winter 2022-2023

One of the main things that stands out about this current winter season is the lack of snowfall…again.

Through the end of March, Syracuse has only accumulated 65.6″ of snow for the season. Not only is this close to 60″ below normal for this point in the season, but it’s also almost 10″ below last year’s seasonal total by March 31st (which was 74″).
    ****
Here in Fairmount/Camillus we are approximately 8 miles West of Syracuse Hancock Airport, so we get snow when officially the Airport doesn’t.
Here my totals stand at: 78″ with 34 days of actual measurable snowfall.

Third snowless winter in a row

Last winter and the one prior ended up on the top 10 least snowy winter seasons. If you do not include our current winter season, in fifth place is the 2020-2021 season with 73.3?, and in 6th place is last year 2021-2022 with 76.0?.

The month of April averages 3.0? of snow, so we shall see how the next few weeks play out. Our current pattern favors accumulating snowfall for the higher elevations outside of Syracuse.

Installed new Lithium Batteries in the transmitter today, when the temp dipped into the 30’s the console showed a low battery.
Better to get it done now than in January or February.
