Heat wave in September – Latest ever recorded

After a summer without a single day of 90° degrees, (I recorded 2, Aug 2nd and third, 90.4°) Syracuse has strung together three of them in the first week of autumn.

Today’s high temp of 91° at Hancock International Airport makes an official heat wave, defined as three consecutive days of 90 or more. Monday’s high was 90, and Tuesday’s was a record-breaking 91.

This is the latest heat wave of the year on record. The previous record was Sept. 10 to 14, 1934. (Records go back to 1902.)

The last time Syracuse had a heat wave was Aug. 11 to 13, 2016.

Today’s high also shattered the previous Sept. 27 record of 83, set in 1929.

Before Monday, Syracuse had just two 90-degree days this year, and they were June 12 and 18.

Fairmount Hill’s readings:

Sept 25 – (90.9)
Sept 26 – (91.7)
Sept 27 – (90.9)
