20 years ago, Labor Day Storm killed 3

20 years ago, Labor Day Storm killed 3, left severe damage, became burned in CNY’s memory

In a region known more for its relentless snowstorms every winter, there is at least one summer thunderstorm that many residents in central New York don’t easily, or ever, forget.

This week marks the 20th anniversary of the Labor Day Storm — the weather event that jolted many awake in the early morning hours of Sept. 7, 1998 with a show of force not often seen around here before, or since.

The powerful storm — which produced hurricane-force wind gusts up to 115 mph, heavy rains and hail and up to 100 lightning strikes per minute — killed three people, two of them at the New York State Fair, which had its final day canceled due to the amount of damage at the grounds in Geddes.

The storm forced over 200 people into shelters, damaged 2,000 buildings, toppled tens of thousands of trees and power lines, knocked out power for a quarter of a million people and caused an estimated combined $60 million in damage in Onondaga and Cayuga counties.

Sean Hannity: Get Real, NIKE

Here’s what “sacrificing everything’ REALLY looks like

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is not new to controversy.

As a player, he frequently used the NFL as a public platform to protest what he called police brutality and what he perceived as America’s ongoing oppression against minorities in the country.

He famously refused to stand for the national anthem during games, leading others on the field to do the same.

Look at the socks he wore with police officers depicted as pigs. He wore them in practice. He even donned a T-shirt featuring Cuban dictator Fidel Castro during a press conference ahead of a game against the Miami Dolphins.

Nike is now using Kaepernick to headline their new ad campaign and the words you see on your screen read, “believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.”

I would like to take a moment to remind Nike executives what sacrificing everything looks like: It’s not a multimillionaire, social justice warrior whose greatest feat of bravery is kneeling on a football field and wearing those socks against our police officers.

Instead, those who sacrifice everything can be found on the ground in Afghanistan as we speak: U.S. soldiers fighting and dying to keep this country safe — fighting for a cause bigger than themselves.

They can be found in the bravery and the courage of men and women that protect and serve: the police, firemen, first responders that run towards danger when we all run away. And they can also be found in graveyards all around the world from Normandy, to the Pacific, from Vietnam to Korea.

All across the United States, there are millions of men and women who have really sacrificed everything for strangers they didn’t even know, so that the world, this country, could be a better, safer, freer place.

There are plenty of heroes in this country that Nike could feature, but Colin Kaepernick — a Castro-loving American, a cop-hating, ex- three-year backup quarterback – he’s is not one of them.

Dangerous heat wave enters Central New York this weekend.

Syracuse- A heat wave will bake Central New York this weekend with high temperatures and oppressive humidity. Dangerous heat index values will result, especially on Sunday.

*** Sunday could be one of the 10 hottest days in Syracuse history ***

The forecast calls for a high of 99 degrees. Syracuse has been that hot on just nine days since since records began in 1902. Four of those days were in this century; the remaining five were in the 1930s.

The last time it was at least 99 degrees was July 17, 2012, when the temperature hit 101.

Syracuse has recorded high temperatures of 98, 100, 101 and 102, but never 99.

Another heat record, the hottest low temperature, could be set Sunday. The record is 76, also set in 1931. The forecast calls for 74 degrees.

The highest low temperature record is important because the warmer it stays at night, the more likely people can suffer heat problems and the harder air conditioning systems have to work.

The National Weather Service is likely to issue its strongest heat warning for Sunday afternoon as the heat and high humidity combine to create a heat index of of more than 100 degrees. The last time an excessive heat warning was issued for Syracuse was July 21, 2011.

Syracuse’s Snowiest March months

Central New York is in the middle of the third-snowiest March on record, and more snow could be on the way.

There’s still plenty of time to beat the all-time record set in 1993 by the
Blizzard of the Century Syracuse needs just another foot of snow to hit that mark.

March of 1993, in which 42 inches of snow fell in two days. Total for that month was 54.4 inches. (The normal amount of snowfall for an entire month of March, is 18 inches.)
Since last fall, Syracuse has had 149.7 inches of snow, enough to be the 12th snowiest season since records began in 1903.
The snowiest? That was 1992-1993, with 192.1 inches. Normal for Syracuse is 124 inches.

If the old saying for March, (in like a lion, —– out like a lamb) holds true, we may be in for a early spring!!

Year SnowFall
01 1993 54.4
02 2001 45.0
03 2018 43.6   * (35.75)
04 1992 41.3
05 1984 40.3
06 1947 38.6
07 1971 37.2
08 1956 36.0
09 1950 33.9

The Golden Snowball Award is a contest between 5 cities in CNY – Upstate New York. The contest is based on which city receives the most snowfall for the snow season.
