Heat wave in September – Latest ever recorded

After a summer without a single day of 90° degrees, (I recorded 2, Aug 2nd and third, 90.4°) Syracuse has strung together three of them in the first week of autumn.

Today’s high temp of 91° at Hancock International Airport makes an official heat wave, defined as three consecutive days of 90 or more. Monday’s high was 90, and Tuesday’s was a record-breaking 91.

This is the latest heat wave of the year on record. The previous record was Sept. 10 to 14, 1934. (Records go back to 1902.)

The last time Syracuse had a heat wave was Aug. 11 to 13, 2016.

Today’s high also shattered the previous Sept. 27 record of 83, set in 1929.

Before Monday, Syracuse had just two 90-degree days this year, and they were June 12 and 18.

Fairmount Hill’s readings:

Sept 25 – (90.9)
Sept 26 – (91.7)
Sept 27 – (90.9)

Total Eclipse – August 21,2017

Monday August 21,2017 The USA will have a front row seat to a coast to coast Solar Eclipse.

NASA eyes on the Eclipse

NASA eyes on the Eclipse

For more information visit: http://eyes.jpl.nasa.gov/eyes-on-eclipse-web-detail.html (link is external)
Millions of Americans have converged on a narrow corridor stretching from Oregon to South Carolina to watch the moon blot out the midday sun Monday for a wondrous couple of minutes in the first total solar eclipse to sweep coast to coast in 99 years.

Veteran eclipse watchers warned the uninitiated to get ready to be blown away.
The moon hasn’t thrown this much shade at the U.S. since 1918. That was the country’s last coast-to-coast total eclipse.

In fact, the U.S. mainland hasn’t seen a total solar eclipse since 1979 — and even then, only five states in the Northwest experienced total darkness before the eclipse veered in Canada.

Monday’s total eclipse will cast a shadow that will race through 14 states, entering near Lincoln City, Oregon, at 1:16 p.m. EDT, moving diagonally across the heartland and then exiting near Charleston, South Carolina, at 2:47 p.m. EDT. The path will cut 2,600 miles (4,200 kilometers) across the land and will be just 60 to 70 miles (96 kilometers to 113 kilometers) wide.

Looking directly at the sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (“totality”), when the moon entirely blocks the sun’s bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality

The only time it’s safe to look directly without protective eyewear is during totality, when the sun is 100 percent covered. Otherwise, keep the solar specs on or use pinhole projectors that can cast an image of the eclipse into a box.

The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. will be in 2024. The next coast-to-coast one will not be until 2045.

More info can be found on the official NASA website. Live streaming video will also be available, TONS of coverage will be available during the event, be sure to catch it and enjoy it if you can!

New Temperature Sensor

02-08-2017

Installed a new temperature sensor today, over the past couple weeks I was getting a lot of “Sensor contact Lost ” messages
in the software log files. I decided to change it while the weather was not too brutally cold! I had just changed the batteries
on 11-29-2016 with fresh lithium batteries, so figured the sensor array could be getting ready to shit the bed on me.
